From Stretching to Fracture: A Brief Discussion on the "Three Major Mechanical Properties" of Gr5/TC4 Titanium Plate

We all know that titanium plate is a highly favored material - Gr5 titanium plate (domestic brand TC4), which always occupies a core position. Its chemical composition is Ti-6Al-4V, consisting of 6% aluminum, 4% vanadium, and the balance titanium. As a benchmark for α+β duplex titanium alloys, its application is based on the golden combination of three major mechanical properties: tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. Today, Baoji Yumingda Metal Materials will break down the meanings of these three key indicators in plain language based on daily production and usage.

A qualified Gr5 titanium plate cannot pass the test solely based on its composition. Before leaving the factory, it must undergo a core "physical examination" - a mechanical performance report. In this test, engineers will focus on three major indicators: tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. They answered three questions respectively: How much can the material withstand? When does permanent deformation begin? How long can it be pulled before breaking?

What is tensile strength? Tensile strength (symbol Rp0.2, unit MPa), in simple terms, refers to the maximum tensile force that a titanium plate can withstand before being pulled apart. During testing, the standard titanium plate sample is mounted on a tensile machine and stretched at a constant speed until it fractures. The maximum stress during the process is the tensile strength.

Popular understanding: For example, when carrying heavy objects, muscles can temporarily bear a certain amount of weight (elastic zone), but once overweight, the arms will be stretched back (plastic deformation).

What is yield strength? The yield strength, also known as the specified plastic elongation strength (symbol σ 0.2, unit MPa), refers to the critical stress value at which a titanium plate transitions from "elastic deformation" (returning to its original state after tension is removed) to "plastic deformation" (permanent deformation after tension is removed).

In tug of war competitions, the maximum tensile strength that a rope can withstand is its tensile strength. Once this value is reached, the rope may break at any time.

What is elongation? Elongation, also known as post fracture elongation (symbol δ 5, unit%). The percentage of the elongation length of the gauge length segment after the titanium plate is pulled apart compared to the original gauge length. It measures the plasticity and toughness of materials - the higher the elongation, the greater the deformation that the titanium plate can withstand before fracture, the stronger its impact and cracking resistance, and the less likely it is to "brittle fracture".

Popular understanding: The elongation rate of chalk is almost 0%, and it will break brittle when pulled; And Gr5 titanium plate is like high-quality kraft candy, which can stretch by more than 10% before breaking.

In the standard ASTM B265 or GB/T 3621, the clear provisions for Gr5 titanium plate (T=2.0mm) are as follows. Only when all three values meet the standards, can this Gr5 titanium plate be considered truly qualified.

Tensile strength Rm: ≥ 895 MPa

Yield strength Rp0.2: ≥ 828 MPa

Elongation rate A50mm: ≥ 10%

The excellent performance of Gr5/TC4 titanium plate is the result of the synergistic effect of these three parameters. The ultra-high tensile strength and yield strength endow it with excellent load-bearing capacity, while good elongation ensures its toughness and impact resistance. Gr5/TC4 titanium plates play an irreplaceable role in various fields due to their three core mechanical properties. With the continuous advancement of technology, the performance of Gr5/TC4 titanium plates will continue to be optimized and will surely shine in more fields.
